10/11/2008 - Ottawa, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Johan Franzen netted the game-tying and game- winning goals in the third period and the Detroit Red Wings got past the Ottawa Senators, 3-2, at Scotiabank Place.

"We kept them to the outside and Marty made good saves. They won the Cup for a reason. We are going to have to win a lot of close games. We wanted to win that game 2-1 and we had a couple of breakdowns," Ottawa centerman Jason Spezza said.
Ottawa opened its official home schedule without star forward and captain, Daniel Alfredsson, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Friday. The surgery removed a bone chip in the forward's knee that was dislodged during Sunday's game against Pittsburgh. The ailment could sideline Alfredsson for up to two weeks.
Franzen took a pass from Zetterberg in the neutral zone and after a few strides past the blue line, fired a high shot from the left circle that beat Gerber to the far side to tie the game, 2-2, at the 11:16 mark of the third.
Later in the stanza, Franzen fired a seemingly innocent shot just after skating into the Ottawa zone. But the puck deflected off a Senators defender and squirted just past Gerber for the game-winner with just 1:17 to play.
"The shot hit their defenseman first and that might have fooled (Gerber) a little bit. In close games like this we always talk about taking shots when we have the opportunity and that's what I did. When you shoot the puck, good things happen," Franzen said.
In the early stages of the first period, the Sens struck for a goal after being handed a 5-on-3 advantage with two Red Wing minors less than a minute apart. Filip Kuba and Picard played catch at the point, just inside the circles, and Picard fired a shot that beat Osgood over the right shoulder at the 6:22 mark.
Mikael Samuelsson broke out of the defensive zone with the puck and numbers just past the halfway point of the first. The winger threw the puck across the slot in stride from right to left, where Filppula one-timed a shot past Gerber on the short side to tie the game.
Foligno gave Ottawa a 2-1 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the second period, when he charged the net and snapped off a quick shot that beat Osgood on the left side.
Gerber attempted to make Foligno's tally stand up with 11 third-period saves, including a point-blank stop on a Zetterberg tip almost midway through the period. But Franzen's game-tying goal came less than a minute later and things unraveled for Ottawa from there.

Detroit snapped a two-game skid against Ottawa, but the Red Wings have still taken seven of 10 meetings overall...The Senators were 22-15-4 as the host team last season, while Detroit had an excellent 25-12-4 mark as the visiting team...Dany Heatley was named Ottawa's captain in Alfredsson's place. Terrell Owens could return for Cowboys next game
