Warner, Cardinals win wild one over 49ers

Football Betting Lines

11/11/2008 - Glendale, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kurt Warner threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter, and Arizona's defense came up with a goal-line stand at the end in a 29-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Warner completed 32-of-42 passes and Steve Breaston had seven catches for 121 yards. Anquan Boldin came through with seven catches for 92 yards and a pair of scores, including the big four-yarder with under five minutes remaining as the Cardinals logged their seventh straight home win going back to last year.

Arizona (6-3) won its second in a row and widened its lead to four games in the NFC West, with Seattle, San Francisco and St. Louis all 2-7.

Allen Rossum returned the game's opening kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown for the 49ers (2-7), who dropped their sixth in a row and remained winless under new head coach Mike Singletary.

Shaun Hill connected on 19-of-40 throws for 217 yards with a pair of TDs and two interceptions for San Francisco, while Frank Gore rushed 23 times for 99 yards, but wasn't used on the final rush of the night. Instead, it was Michael Robinson who was stopped short of the end zone.

In a game filled with penalties, 20 combined for a total of 164 yards, the Cardinals' defense came up huge at the end.

Although the penalties were numerous for the Cardinals, they managed to get the key turnover late in the fourth quarter and went ahead a short time later. Hill was picked off by Adrian Wilson, who scored from 21 yards out, but Arizona was offside. Three plays later, linebacker Karlos Dansby picked off Hill over the middle and returned the ball to the five.

On second down, Warner threw quickly to the right for Boldin, who dove into the end zone with 4:16 remaining. The two-point conversion pass failed, leaving Arizona with a 29-24 advantage.

Hill then drove the 49ers to the Arizona 18, but on 3rd-and-3 was pressured in the pocket and tried a shovel pass, which was picked off by Wilson.

Arizona failed to run out the clock, and the 49ers had one more shot, getting the ball at Cardinals' 42 after a punt.

Hill completed three straight passes to Jason Hill, but the QB then spiked the ball to kill the clock with 20 seconds left. The 49ers tried a running play. Gore was bottled up, but bounced to the left and slithered into the end zone, but after he was already down by contact by Chike Okeafor at the 2 1/2 yard line. Replays showed Gore was down by contact, and after a stoppage with four seconds left, Hill handed off to Robinson, but the middle was plugged, ending the game.

Rossum got an excellent block from Robinson and went untouched down the right sideline to the end zone. It was the second-longest kickoff return in 49ers history and matched the second-longest in the history to start an NFL game.

Neil Rackers' 28-yard field goal ended Arizona's first possession, but the 49ers expanded their lead to 14-3 on Shaun Hill's 31-yard TD pass to Josh Morgan just 47 seconds into the second quarter.

Warner came right back with a 13-yard scoring toss to Boldin on a short four- play drive, keyed by a 46-yard connection from Warner to Breaston.

A 33-yard field goal from Rackers with 4:41 left in the half had the Cardinals within a point.

Shaun Hill engineered a late second-quarter drive, throwing to a leaping Vernon Davis in the middle of the end zone for an 18-yard score with 29 seconds left in the half, expanding San Francisco's lead to 21-13. The 49ers converted four third downs during the march.

Davis drew an unsportsmanlike penalty for removing his helmet on the field, but was then seen embracing a smiling Singletary on the sidelines, a huge contrast to the blowup from two weeks ago.

Davis was benched in a highly-publicized confrontation with Singletary during a 34-13 home loss to Seattle on October 26. In that game, Davis drew a personal foul penalty in the fourth quarter and was told to hit the showers instead of coming back to finish the game.

Warner's five-yard TD pass to Larry Fitzgerald on 4th-and-1 in the early minutes of the third drew the Cardinals within 21-20.

Joe Nedney booted a 41-yard field goal with 7:02 remaining in the third for a four-point difference.

The Cardinals seemingly went ahead with just over a minute left in the third when Antrel Rolle returned an interception 30 yards for a score, but the play was nullified by a neutral zone infraction by Wilson.

Shaun Hill gave the ball up anyway, fumbling the snap two plays later, but despite having the ball at the 10, the Cardinals got just three points, on a Rackers 23-yard field goal in the opening minute of the fourth.

Each team punted on its ensuing possessions, leading to the finish.

Game Notes

Abe Woodson (105 yards) has the longest kickoff return in 49ers history, Nov. 22, 1959 versus the Los Angeles Rams...Arizona has won six of the last eight meetings.

American Idol Betting Odds: Season 6

The online gambling websites are in the process of deciphering each American Idol contestant and his or her chances of winning Season 6 to come up with the early American Idol betting lines.

Tim Dalton of MySportsbook.com has been locked away in a soundproof room coming up with all the latest tallies, we are told. "American Idol has become one of the most significant betting events of the year," claims Jack Black of MySportsbook.com.  "Last year, millions were bet during the season across the globe, not just in America.

It's tough early on since we really do not have a glimpse as to how well each of these individuals will perform solo on a week-to-week basis.  It's like Week 1 of the NFL.  Pre-season means nada!

We do know the 24 finalists however.

Sanjaya Malakar is the young man whose sister failed to make it into the Top 24.  He's very low key but - unless he totally flubs - will probably win over the young girlie vote for a few weeks anyway.  He's too young to go all the way, according to Payton O'Brien.

Brandon Rogers - Who?

Phil Stacy is the military guy who missed his daughter's birth because of the Memphis audition.  He should go a good distance.

Chris Sligh - He's got the humor and in many ways he's the Anti-American Idol much like last year's winner Taylor Hicks was.  And this is why he'll probably get pretty far in this competition.  He's chubby, white with a big curly afro....but more importantly, a great voice!  People love "real", not "real cute" to go all the way.

"Blake Lewis should go far because of his uniqueness and looks.  He's the boy next store with a twist - he beat boxes.  But on top of this, he's a great singer, and I adore him," Payton O'Brien relayed.

A talented beat-boxer Blake Lewis was a hit during the group sing in Hollywood but Simon explained that this is a singing contest just before he told him he was “in.”

Paul Kim has caught our own roving reporter, Jenny Woo's eyes.

"I love the fact that there is a Korean American on the show and he is bound to get more Asians tuning into the show," Woo said from her Miami Beach estate.  "There has never been a major presence of Asian-Americans on American Idol in the past.  He's a hottie with a nice voice so that should help to take him far.  Expect heavy betting action from the Asian community."

Sundance Head - He's not perfect, but he's got the personality that will take him through a few weeks, plus he's got the lineage (son of Roy Head - whose 1965 single, "Treat Her Right," hit No. 5 in the charts)

And the others:

Rudy Cardinas
AJ Tabaldo - the 5th time is the charm
Nicolas Pedro
Chris Richardson
Jared Cotter

The girls

"Melinda Doolittle has one of the best voices," says MySportsbook.com Reporter and an acclaimed dancer in her own right, Destiney Lewis.  "It is great to see a back up singer step out like she has.  The girl needs to gain more confidence but that can also be a positive.  I think she will go far."

Alena Alexander - Those tears (she never seems to stop bawling) should get her far.

"Single mom Lakisha Jones I suspect will be a pretty big favorite entering Week 1 of the competition," says Destiny Williams.  Jones is an excellent singer and down to earth.  "She'll have a wide appeal," echoed O'Brien.

Nicole Trellis - Seems to exert confidence.

Amy Krebs - a powerful singer.

Antonella Barba
Gina Glocksen
Hailey Scanardo
Jordan Sparks
Stephanie Edwards
Leslie Hunt
Sabrina Sloan
