10/09/2008 - Madrid, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Paul Broadhurst, Magnus A. Carlsson and Marcus Fraser each posted rounds of four-under 67 on Thursday to share the opening-round lead of the inaugural Madrid Masters.
Pablo Larrazabal, Steven Jeppesen, James Kamte, Santiago Luna and Steve Webster are knotted in fourth place at three-under 68 at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
Broadhurst began on the 10th tee Thursday and parred his first five holes. The Englishman birdied the par-four 15th and par-four 18th to make the turn at two-under 33.
Broadhurst parred Nos. 1 and 2, then collected back-to-back birdies from the third. Unfortunately, he followed with two bogeys in a row from five to fall back to minus-two.
At the par-five seventh, Broadhurst recorded his fifth birdie of the round. He closed with his second birdie in his last three holes at nine to get into the first-round lead.
"I possibly had a chance to shoot a bit better. I could've easily made it to six (under par)," said Broadhurst. "You take the good with the bad and not be to greedy."
Carlsson did not have a birdie chance until the fourth hole, but minimized the damage with only one bogey. He birdied the fifth to draw even, then birdied No. 9 to turn in 35.
On the second nine Carlsson birdied the 14th and eagled the par-four 15th for his share of first.
"I started out quite slow, but the back nine I kept going," said Carlsson.
The Swede has back-to-back top 10s with a tie for fifth at the British Masters and share of seventh at last week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Carlsson credits more work with his short game.
"I've been working a lot on my short game and it's giving me results," said Carlsson. "I got my card secured and that was my goal for the season. I can be a little more relaxed now."
Fraser was the only co-leader that played in the afternoon and he was flawless on Thursday. He started on the second nine and tallied birdies at 14 and 17. Fraser picked up birdies at four and eight to join Broadhurst and Carlsson in the lead.
Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez, fourth on the European Tour Order of Merit, shot a two-under 69 on Thursday and is part of a large group tied for ninth place.
Peter Baker, Sion E. Bebb, Ariel Canete, Carlos Del Moral, Jean-Baptiste Gonnet, Ricardo Gonzalez, Thongchai Jaidee, Shiv Kapur, Jose Manuel Lara, Damien McGrane, Gareth Paddison, Charl Schwartzel, Francis Valera and Paul Waring joined Jimenez in ninth.
Two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal made his first start since the BMW PGA Championship in late May. He shot a one-under 70 and is tied for 24th place.
