01/02/2007 - Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Mats Sundin had a pair of goals and added an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs dominated the Boston Bruins, 5-1, in the opener of a home-and-home battle at Air Canada Centre.
Jeff O'Neill had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who won for just the second time in their last seven games. Hal Gill tallied, rookie center Kris Newbury scored his first career NHL goal, and Andrew Raycroft made 27 saves in a strong effort between the pipes.
Zdeno Chara had the lone marker for Boston, which has lost three of four. Tim Thomas stopped 30-of-35 shots in a losing effort.
The Bruins took advantage of a 5-on-3 chance in the first period to grab a 1-0 lead. Off a couple quick passes, Marco Sturm launched a wrist shot, and the rebound landed in a choice spot for Chara, who shifted from the backhand to the forehand and jabbed the puck past Raycroft at 4:51.
A short time later, Bates Battaglia and John Pohl went the other way in an odd-man rush, but Battaglia's shot rang off the near post to keep the Maple Leafs off the scoreboard.
The Leafs then cashed in on a power play to tie things up at 1-1. Sundin got credit for the tip-in on a quick, hard re-direct off a pass from Brian McCabe at 8:09.
Gill's deflection off Boyd Devereaux's 51-foot snapshot snuck past a screened Thomas to put Toronto up 2-1 at 12:19. The puck sliced through traffic and just glaced off Gill's stick before getting through low on the stick side. The netminder complained that Gill made contact with him in the crease, but the goal stood.
Newbury got the lone tally of the second period during 4-on-4 action. The goal was somewhat accidental, as Thomas went to play the puck off Newbury's wrist shot, and the disc kicked off the heel of his stick and ended up behind him, trickling across the goal line at 12:24 to put Toronto up by a 3-1 margin.
Sundin notched his second of the night on a breakaway up the ice, as he gained some seperation, skated into the offensive zone unchallenged, and fired a wrist shot past Thomas for a 4-1 Maple Leafs edge early in the third period.
O'Neill made it 5-1 with a power play score, as he accepted a backhand pass from Sundin, knocking home the one-timer from the doorstep of the crease at 5:13.
"I think it has been better in the last week," said Sundin, talking about the team's work ethic. "You really have to start winning games now. The playoffs start now. We've got to get better defensively, not just the goalie and the defense, but the forwards too. We have enough guys that can score. We have to play better defensively."
Game Notes
Devereaux has a point in all three games he has dressed for the Leafs during his emergency call-up (1G, 2A)...Boston's score on the two-man advantage marked the first time this year the Leafs have surrendered a 5-on-3 goal...Sundin has points in nine of his last 11 games. He has eight goals and nine assists for 17 points in that stretch and has taken 55 shots on goal in his last 12 games...Boston finished the night with one power play goal in four chances, while the Leafs were successful on two of their six opportunities...The teams will meet again Thursday evening in Boston...The Bruins are 261-249-98-3 all-time vs. Toronto, but the Leafs own a 4-2-0 mark vs. Boston this season.

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.
NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.
Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.
Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
