11/15/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The red-hot Washington Capitals will aim for a home-and- home sweep of New Jersey tonight, when the slumping Devils host the finale at the Prudential Center.
The Capitals have won five straight and are coming off Friday's home victory over the Devils. Washington has also won seven of its last nine tests and are leading the Southeast Division with 22 points.
Washington took the opener of the home-and-home with a 3-1 decision over Jersey at the Verizon Center. Alexander Ovechkin and Brooks Laich both had a goal and an assist to help the Caps, who are in the midst of their longest winning streak since posting victories in the final seven games of last year's regular season.
Ovechkin is on a three-game goal-scoring streak and has collected 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) during Washington's current winning stretch.
Tomas Fleischmann also scored, while Mike Green collected two helpers for the Capitals.
Jose Theodore, making his first start since November 1, turned in a confidence-building performance between the pipes for Washington, stopping 32- of-33 shots. The Quebec native had allowed five goals in his previous start against Buffalo.
Alexander Semin, the NHL's leading scorer with 27 points, left in the second period of Friday's game with an undisclosed upper-body injury and did not return. The injury isn't serious and Semin, who had a five-game point streak snapped, could be ready to return in tonight's contest.
Patrik Elias lit the lamp and Scott Clemmensen made 24 saves for New Jersey, which has dropped four straight and eight of its last 10 games overall.
The Devils are 1-5-0 since franchise goaltender Martin Brodeur suffered a torn biceps muscle in a game against Atlanta on November 1. Brodeur, a four-time Vezina Trophy winner, is expected to be sidelined for three-to-four months.
Tonight's test marks the opener of a five-game road trip for Washington, which is 3-4-1 as the visiting club this year. The Devils, who begin a three-game homestand this evening, are 4-4-1 as the host.
Washington has taken two of the last three meetings with the Devils. The Caps have also posted two victories in their last three trips to New Jersey, but are 1-1 since the Devils moved to the Prudential Center at the start of last season.
