Southeast Missouri places hoops coach Edgar on leave

Cbasketball Betting Lines

10/09/2008 - Cape Girardeau, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Southeast Missouri State men's basketball coach Scott Edgar has been placed on administrative leave after the university received a notice of allegations from the NCAA concerning possible major violations within the program.

Edgar will retain the title of head coach, but an acting head coach will be appointed while the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions hears the case and releases its findings.

An acting head coach will be named in the future.

In addition, the university has relieved athletic director Don Kaverman of his duties and appointed associate athletic director Cindy Gannon interim director until a new AD is named. Gannon requested not to be considered as a candidate for the full-time position. Kaverman was placed on administrative leave until February 7, 2009, when his contract will end.

Southeast Missouri State president Kenneth W. Dobbins received a letter from the NCAA on Monday, but details of the allegations were not revealed.

"Southeast is extremely disappointed with these allegations," Dobbins said in a statement. "We consider the allegations of NCAA infractions regarding our men's basketball program to be a matter of significant concern. Given the serious nature of the allegations, we believed we needed to take immediate action in the best interests of the program. We have in the past, and will in the future, cooperate fully with the NCAA's ongoing investigation."

Edgar was entering his third season with the Red hawks, who were 12-19 last season and 11-20 in 2006-07.

Southeast Missouri marked Edgar's third different head coaching position and second within the Ohio Valley Conference. He was the head coach at OVC rival Murray State from 1991-95, guiding the Racers to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, then spent the following three years at Duquesne.

According to Southeast Missouri State, the university began reviewing information brought to its attention concerning potential violations of NCAA legislation in the men's and women's basketball programs in the spring of 2008. The school then contacted the NCAA.

The university has until January 2, 2009 to file formal written responses to the allegations received earlier this week. The NCAA Infractions Committee will then consider the response, decide if the allegations are substantiated and impose penalties, if any. The case will likely be discussed by the committee in February or April.

In June, Southeast Missouri was penalized for violations within the women's basketball program. Included was two years of probation, vacation of records for two seasons from 2004-06 and reductions in recruiting activity and in the number of scholarships.

Mens NCAA Basketball Tournament odds
As of February 9, MySportsbook.com has released its coveted 2007 Mens NCAA Basketball Tournament betting odds. “March Madness betting ” only a month away, the top ranked Florida Gators are favorite at 7-2 to win it all. The defending champs have not disappointed at all this season and currently have a 22-2 record and are undefeated (9-0) in SEC play. The Gators’ thrive off of their extremely balanced, experienced and versatile attack. All five starters started in last seasons National Championship game. What is most impressive with this group is their balance; the five starters all average between 10.7 and 13.6 PPG. The Gators have been on an absolute roll having won 15 straight by an average of 16.4 PPG.

Right behind the Gators are the 5th ranked UNC Tar Heels at 9-2. The Heels (21-3, 7-2) are absolutely loaded with top notch talent and are as deep as any team in the country. A concern for the Tar Heels might be inexperience. Of their top four scorers/ minute earners, three are freshmen and the other is a sophomore. The rest of the regular season, the Tar Heels play only one team that is currently ranked (Duke). Their remaining opponents do combine for an impressive 107-58 record though.

Other teams that the MySportsbook.com members seem to believe will win it all include the west coasts’ top team #2 UCLA (6-1), #3 OSU behind man-child Greg Oden (8-1), and #4 Wisconsin (10-1) behind their defense which has given up 70+ points only three times all season.

Below is a list of some of the favorites to win the 2007 Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship lines. For the full list of teams and March Madness odds be sure to log onto MySportsbook.com. MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.

Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.

According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).

Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.

''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''

Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.

Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.

''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''

Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.

Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.

”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''

The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.
