Red Wings battle Ducks on special night for Yzerman

01/02/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Anaheim Ducks will try to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season tonight, when they visit the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

The Ducks, who lead the NHL with 62 points, are coming off a setback Friday in Carolina and Sunday's loss at Minnesota.

The Wild earned the 4-3 victory on New Year's Eve as Mark Parrish scored the game-winning goal late in the third period.

Teemu Selanne posted two goals and an assist for the Ducks, who have also lost three of four. Scott Niedermayer contributed a goal and two assists.

Michael Wall stopped 25 shots for the Ducks. Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the team's normal starter, missed the game after suffering a groin strain Tuesday in a 4-3 victory at San Jose. Giguere left in the second period of that game and is day-to-day. Regular backup Ilya Bryzgalov has also been sidelined nearly a month, leaving Wall as the team's emergency starter.

To add to the Ducks' injury woes, defenseman Chris Pronger left Sunday's test with a broken foot after trying to defend a Parrish shot in the first period. The former Hart and Norris Trophy winner is sidelined indefinitely.

Tonight plans to be a special night for the Red Wings and their fans, as the team will retire Steve Yzerman's No. 19 in a pre-game ceremony. A three-time Stanley Cup champion (1997, '98, 2002) and 10-time All-Star, Yzerman amassed 692 goals and 1,755 points before retiring following last season.

Yzerman played his entire 22-year career in Detroit and was the team's captain from the start of the 1986-87 campaign until he retired, making him the longest-serving captain of any team in NHL history.

The Red Wings have won three straight and are fresh off Sunday's easy win over visiting Los Angeles. Dominik Hasek made 28 saves and Pavel Datsyuk collected a goal and one assist as Detroit toppled the Kings, 6-2, at Joe Louis Arena.

Jason Williams also recorded a goal and one helper while Tomas Holmstrom, Valtteri Filppula, Kris Draper and Mikael Samuelsson rounded out the scoring for the Red Wings, who have won seven of their last nine and are just two points behind Nashville for first place in the Central Division.

Hasek earned his 20th win of the campaign for Detroit, which also won its sixth consecutive New Year's Eve home contest.

The Ducks earned a victory over Detroit in the teams' first meeting of the year back on October 18, but the Red Wings have won three of the last five encounters. Anaheim has also dropped six straight contests in the Motor City.
