Rangers return to New York to host Blackhawks

Hockey Betting Lines

10/10/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Rangers are back in North America for their official home debut of the 2008-09 season, as they welcome the Chicago Blackhawks to Madison Square Garden.

The Blueshirts opened the regular season with a pair of games against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Czech Republic last weekend. New York took both contests in Prague by a 2-1 score.

The Blackhawks, meanwhile, will begin their season tonight in the Big Apple after missing out on the playoffs last year by just three points.

New York last played on Sunday at the O2 Arena in Prague and were led by Wade Redden and Scott Gomez in the victory as each players scored a goal and assisted on another.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 18 shots in the victory, one day after turning aside 20 in a 2-1 Ranger win.

Markus Naslund notched an assist on Sunday after scoring one of New York's goals in Saturday's opener. Both Naslund and Redden were added as free agents in the offseason.

The Blackhawks are loaded with young talent on both ends of the ice, but the focus is on forwards Patrick Kane, last year's Calder Trophy winner, and Jonathan Toews, who finished third to Kane in voting for the league's top rookie.

Chicago will also see the official debut of Brian Campbell, who was signed to an eight-year deal worth approximately $57 million. The 29-year-old defenseman is in the prime of his career and can play both aspects of the game. Whether he's quarterbacking the power play or skating against the opposition's top scorers, Campbell excels in all aspects of the game and will make an immediate impact on a defensive corps that was already pretty strong.

Campbell had 62 points (8 goals, 54 assists) in 83 combined games with Buffalo and San Jose during the 2007-08 regular season.

The 'Hawks also added a new goaltender over the summer, signing Cristobal Huet to a four-year deal. The 32-year-old Frenchman, who was a seventh-round pick of Chicago in 2001, was 32-14-6 last season between Montreal and Washington.

The Blackhawks are 3-1-1 (1 loss, 1 tie) in the last four meetings with New York, but have lost two of their last three tests in the Garden.

Chicago has lost five of its last eight season openers, while the Rangers will be aiming for a third consecutive win in home debuts.
