Marshall Law: Cubs' rookie shuts down Astros

Baseball Betting Lines

07/06/2006 - Houston, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Sean Marshall tossed seven-shutout innings to help Chicago avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of Houston with a 1-0 win at Minute Maid Park.

Marshall (5-7) earned the win as he scattered six hits and walked three while striking out two batters. He let his defense do the work, getting 13 fly-ball outs, and stranding 12 base runners.

Todd Walker knocked in the lone run for the Cubs, who got a much-needed win after dropping five of their last six games.

Roy Oswalt (6-5) was the tough-luck loser despite giving up just one run on eight hits. He walked only two batters while striking out six in his 11th career complete game. Craig Biggio went 3-for-5 but Lance Berkman went 0-for-4 and left seven men on base for the Astros, who saw their season-high four-game winning streak halted.

After four scoreless innings, Chicago broke the deadlock in the fifth. Michael Barrett lined a one-out single to right, and Walker followed by lacing a double into the gap in left center, scoring Barrett. Neifi Perez singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Marshall, however Juan Pierre grounded out to end the inning.

The Astros tried to respond immediately when they loaded the bases in home half of the frame. Jason Lane came to the plate with the sacks full and sent a deep fly ball to left center, however the ball died on the warning track and was hauled in by Pierre, keeping Houston off the board.

Marshall ran into trouble again in the seventh after Biggio doubled off the top of the wall in left to lead off the frame. Chris Burke moved Biggio to third with a sacrifice bunt, but Marshall escaped unscathed when he got the next two batters, Morgan Ensberg and Berkman to ground out.

After Bobby Howry worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, Ryan Dempster pitched himself into a jam in the ninth. Pinch hitter Orlando Palmeiro drew a leadoff walk and was replaced by the speedy Willy Taveras as a pinch runner. Taveras moved to third when Biggio bounced a single up the middle with one out. However, Taveras was left stranded 90 feet away when Burke popped out to the catcher, and Ensberg grounded into a force out, ending the game and giving Dempster his 13th save of the year.

Game Notes

The Cubs had lost seven-straight to Houston before Wednesday. They are now 2-7 against the Astros this season...Marshall allowed no runs in a start for the third time this season...Houston catcher Brad Ausmus snapped an 0-for-40 slump with a single in the fourth inning...The Cubs open a four-game set in Milwaukee on Thursday, while Houston will play host to St. Louis on Thursday for the first of four games.

Stanley Cup betting

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.

The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.

MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.

Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
