10/23/2008 - Castellon, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Soren Kjeldsen fired a seven-under 64 Thursday to grab a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the inaugural Castello Masters Costa Azahar.
Former U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera headlines the group one shot back at minus-six. Cabrera was joined there by Peter Hanson, Richard Finch and local favorite Ignacio Garrido.
Seven more players are tied at five-under 66, including Spaniards Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia, who lists Club de Campo del Mediterraneo as his home course and is considered the tournament host this week.
Kjeldsen played the back nine first on Thursday and opened with a birdie on the 10th. He came back with birdies at 13 and 15 to move to minus-three.
After a birdie on the 16th, Kjeldsen stumbled to a bogey at No. 17 to make the turn at three-under.
Kjeldsen, whose lone tour win came in 2003, recovered that lost stroke with a birdie at the second and then made it two in a row with a birdie on the third.
The Dane poured in back-to-back birdies from the seventh to grab the lead at seven-under. He parred the final two holes to remain on top.
"It was a very solid round. I'm playing well, as I did last week at the Portugal Masters," Kjeldsen admitted. "There's still a long way to go this week, but this is a good start."
Cabrera had a bogey-free round with three birdies on both nines.
Hanson converted five birdie chances on the front nine, but also dropped a pair of shots. On the back nine, his three birdies gave him a share of second.
Finch birdied his first hole, the 10th, then birdied five of the first eight holes on the front nine to jump to six-under.
Garrido birdied three of his first four from the 10th. After a birdie on 17, he tripped to a bogey on the 18th. Three more birdies around the turn gave him a share of second.
Olazabal and Garcia were joined in a share of sixth place by John Bickerton, Simon Dyson, Francois Delamontagne, Thomas Levet and Alvaro Velasco.
Last week's winner, Alvaro Quiros, is one of 11 golfers tied for 13th at four- under-par 67.
This being the final full-field event of the season, players are battling to get into the top 60 on the Order of Merit to qualify for next week's Volvo Masters.
Other players are fighting to end inside the top 115 on the Order of Merit to keep their tour cards for next year.
Peter O'Malley, Shiv Kapur and Sam Little, ranked 114th, 116th and 117th on the Order of Merit, are currently on the cut line of plus-one. Jean-Baptiste Gonnet, who holds the 115th spot on the Order of Merit, is tied for 51st at even-par 71.
