Celtics are latest elite team to invade MSG

Basketball Betting Lines

02/06/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Boston Celtics may be the reigning world champions, but the team will have a tough act to follow when it invades Madison Square Garden for tonight's clash with the New York Knicks.

The historic venue was the scene of two memorable individual performances by visiting superstars over the past few days. On Monday, Kobe Bryant amassed the highest point total in Madison Square Garden in over 24 years when the perennial All-Star poured in 61 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 126-117 victory over the Knicks. Two nights later, LeBron James answered Bryant's effort with 52 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds during Cleveland's 107-102 triumph over New York on Wednesday.

Boston may be entering this evening's showdown a little weary, after the Eastern Division leaders lost a hard-fought overtime matchup to the Lakers at TD Banknorth Garden last night. Lamar Odom hit two free throws with 16 seconds remaining in the extra session to lift Los Angeles to a thrilling 110-109 win.

Newly-named All-Star Ray Allen had 22 points to pace Boston, but his three- point shot at the end was well off the mark as the Celtics had a 12-game winning streak snapped. Prior to Thursday's setback, Boston had not lost since a January 9 defeat at Cleveland.

Paul Pierce added 21 points for the Celtics, while Kevin Garnett recorded 16 points and six rebounds in his return from a two-game absence due to the flu.

Boston will be attempting to extend a six-game road win streak tonight and owns a strong 17-7 record away from home on the season. The Celtics did suffer a loss in their most recent trip to Madison Square Garden, however, with the Knicks producing a 100-88 victory on their home court on January 4.

The Celtics had defeated the Knicks eight straight times before that loss and are 8-2 in their last 10 games as the visitor in this series.

New York had won five in a row at home prior to its recent two losses and is 14-11 at MSG so far this season. The Knicks had also recorded six victories in a seven-game span heading into Monday's encounter with the Lakers.

James' showing on Wednesday overshadowed an outstanding game from the Knicks' Al Harrington, who tied a season best with 39 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. New York forward David Lee recorded his 12th straight double-double by finishing with 12 points and 10 boards.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
